  Evan A. Kitahara was appointed to serve as a judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court by Governor Gavin Newsom on July 28, 2023. Prior to his appointment, he served as a commissioner at the Los Angeles County Superior Court starting in 2019. Kitahara was a deputy public defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office from 1997 to 2019 and worked as a child support enforcement officer at the San Diego County District Attorney's Office in 1997. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego Law School. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Craig Karlan.
