- Robin Emilia Mccoy — Advocate in Atlanta, GA
Robin Emilia McCoy, a queer non-binary trans woman and lifelong Georgian, is a Democratic candidate for Georgia State Senate District 5 in the 2026 primary election. An advocate and political scientist with over a decade of community organizing experience, she earned a high school diploma from Berkmar High School and a bachelor's degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 2019. McCoy's career includes work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. She is running to ensure her community has representation and a voice, aiming to stand up for the most marginalized and ensure Georgia is safe for everybody, particularly in a district that experienced low voter turnout.
- Sheikh Rahman — Incumbent State Senator in Lawrenceville, GA
Sheikh Rahman is an incumbent Georgia State Senator representing District 5, encompassing parts of Gwinnett County like Lawrenceville, Norcross, and Duluth. A business owner and the first immigrant elected to the Georgia State Senate, he began his service on January 14, 2019. He is a Muslim, holds a BBA from the University of Georgia, and is married to Sham'e Afrose. Senator Rahman advocates for local control in education, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and protection for DACA and TPS. He also supports increasing the minimum wage, expanding Medicaid, and enacting a Medicare for all system to lower prescription drug costs. He is a member of several committees including Appropriations and Economic Development and Tourism, and is seeking re-election in the 2026 Primary.
