He enjoyed a successful 38-year career in the railroad industry, working for the B&O Railroad, Chessie System, and CSX before retiring as a terminal superintendent in 2017. Morriss first moved to Cumberland in 1983 as an assistant terminal trainmaster and later returned in 2004. He was first elected as the city's mayor in 2018. Actively involved in the community, he has served on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Board and the Rotary Club.
