Karen Lewis Young is a Democratic member of the Maryland State Senate, representing District 3 since her assumption of office on January 11, 2023. Her current term is scheduled to end in January 2027. Prior to serving in the Senate, she was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 2015 to 2023, where she represented District 3A. Her public service career also includes time on the Board of Aldermen for the City of Frederick. Before entering politics, Young built a career in marketing and market research, holding positions at notable companies including Capital One and Allfirst. She earned a bachelor's degree in history from Franklin and Marshall College and holds two master's degrees from Columbia University: an M.A. in American history and an M.B.A.

Her previous political experience includes candidacies for Frederick County Council in 2022 and for Mayor of Frederick in 2017. In 2014, she was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor as a running mate in the gubernatorial race.
