A Democrat, he previously served as Democratic floor leader and whip. Powell, educated at the University of Colorado, Memphis, and Tennessee State, seeks reelection. His policy stances include opposing toll lanes, supporting Nashville's transit plan and an Amtrak line to Atlanta, and advocating for increased housing supply, first-time homebuyer assistance, and universal pre-K.
