A native of Wilson, North Carolina, he graduated from Harvard University in 1974 and Harvard Law School in 1977. His legal career includes working for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina and the office of the North Carolina Attorney General. He also served as an administrative law judge. In 1995, Governor Jim Hunt appointed him to the North Carolina Superior Court, where he served for 17 years. Jones also served on the Wake County Board of Commissioners from 1990 to 1994.
