Alan Cutler was raised in the Scotts Hill community of Pender County and is a graduate of Topsail High School. His law enforcement career began in 1990 as a deputy with the Pender County Sheriff's Office. In 1995, he graduated from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Basic School and served as a State Trooper, initially in Onslow County before transferring back to Pender County in 2006. He retired from the Highway Patrol on November 1, 2018, and was sworn in as the 19th Sheriff of Pender County on December 3, 2018. He has over 31 years of law enforcement experience.
