Thornburg earned a bachelor's degree in history from Davidson College in 1989 and a Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1996. His career includes working in private practice, serving as an aide to U.S. Senator Terry Sanford, and a brief tenure on the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2004. His father is Lacy Thornburg, a former North Carolina Attorney General and federal judge.
