He assumed office in 2009 after being appointed by Governor Mike Easley and was subsequently elected in 2010 and 2018. His current term is set to end on December 31, 2026. Thornburg earned a bachelor's degree in history from Davidson College in 1989 and a Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1996. His career includes working in private practice, serving as an aide to U.S. Senator Terry Sanford, and a brief tenure on the North Carolina Court of Appeals in 2004. His father is Lacy Thornburg, a former North Carolina Attorney General and federal judge.
