Alexander D. Schmidt, 32, is a freelance journalist residing in Carpenter, Iowa, with his partner Emily and cat Roxanne. A lifelong resident of Mitchell County, born in Osage and a 2012 graduate of St. Ansgar Community Schools, he previously worked as a journalist for local newspapers and ABC 6 News. Schmidt is seeking the Democratic nomination for Iowa House District 60, campaigning on priorities such as saving rural Iowa, ensuring a living wage, affordable health care, strong public schools, and protecting natural resources. He announced his candidacy driven by a desire to include younger, progressive Iowans in conversations about the state's future. He has earned the endorsement of the Iowa Federation of Labor.
