Before her election, she served as a Magistrate Judge for over 13 years, presiding over numerous civil cases, issuing warrants, and performing other judicial duties. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, to two educators, she moved to Durham in 1999. Thompson earned her bachelor's degree from Duke University and her Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Her career has been dedicated to public service. She is a member of various community organizations, including Union Baptist Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
