Andy Harris, born in 1957 in Brooklyn, New York, is a Republican politician and physician. He has served as the U.S. Representative for Maryland's 1st congressional district since 2011. His district covers the entire Eastern Shore of Maryland as well as parts of Baltimore County. Harris holds the distinction of being the sole Republican in Maryland's congressional delegation. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in the Maryland Senate from 1999 to 2011. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his M.D., Harris worked as an anesthesiologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also served as a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps, and his unit was activated during Operation Desert Storm. In September 2024, he was elected Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus.
