Prior to her election to the state legislature, she served as the Mayor of Wellington, Florida, from 2016 to 2024, and was a village councilwoman from 2010 to 2016. Outside of her political career, Gerwig works as a CADD drafter and serves as the Director of Client Communications at an engineering firm.
