Born in Englehard, NC, he graduated from Mattamuskeet High School and earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from North Carolina State University in 1988. Prior to becoming mayor, Cahoon served on the Dare County Board of Education. He is also an avid cyclist and ultramarathoner.
