Raised in Kalkaska County, she earned her associate degree from Northwestern Michigan College and a bachelor's in social work from Ferris State University. Coffia began her career as a newspaper reporter and editor before becoming a Head Start social worker. Prior to serving in the state legislature, she served two terms on the Grand Traverse County Commission.
