A resident of North Iredell, he is an alumnus of the district, having attended Central Elementary, Brookwood School, and North Iredell High School. After graduating in 1988, he worked for several years before obtaining his general contractor's license from Mitchell Community College. He currently works as a farmer and carpenter. Sloan is married with three sons.
