Originally from Michigan, he has resided in Washington for over 25 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University. Alward comes from a family of firefighters, with his father and two brothers having served as fire chiefs or deputy chief. He was appointed to the board in August 2016. His professional experience includes working as a vice president with the infrastructure consultant firm Wood Harbinger and as an electrical designer for DOD NAVFAC Northwest.
