Carmen Rivera, a lifelong Renton resident, was elected to the City Council in 2021. She was the first openly queer person and youngest Latina elected to the council. She is the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and an Assistant Teaching Professor at Seattle University. Rivera holds a BA in Criminal Justice from Seattle University and an MSc in the Psychology of Investigation from the University of Liverpool. Her career began as a counselor at Echo Glen Children's Center and she later worked for King County's YouthSource program. Governor Inslee appointed her to the Washington State Sentencing Guidelines Commission.
