Charlie Smith

J. Charles “Charlie” Smith III is the Republican State's Attorney for Frederick County, Maryland, first elected in 2006 and currently serving his 5th term. A graduate of the University of Maryland and the University of Baltimore School of Law, he began his career as a prosecutor in Baltimore City before entering private practice. He joined the Frederick County State's Attorney's Office in 1998, where he served as Deputy State's Attorney. In 2023, Smith was elected President of the National District Attorneys Association. His priorities include prosecuting violent crimes, combating the opioid epidemic, and diverting non-violent offenders from the criminal justice system.
