First elected to the Senate in 2018, he previously served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2015 to 2019. A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Lam earned his bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve University before obtaining a medical degree from the University of Maryland and a master's in public health from Johns Hopkins University. Concurrently with his legislative duties, he works as a preventive medicine physician at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Lam ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2024 but was defeated in the Democratic primary.
