He is a native of High Point, North Carolina, and a graduate of Southwest Guilford High School. Rogers holds college degrees in Theology and Criminal Justice, as well as a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Executive Management from Walden University. Prior to being elected, he worked as a business owner and as a law enforcement officer with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office and the High Point Police Department. He is the first African-American to be elected Sheriff in Guilford County.
