Dawne Shand is a Democratic State Representative for Massachusetts' 1st Essex District, first elected in 2022. She grew up on a cattle farm in Selma, Alabama, in the first generation of students to integrate Selma's public schools, graduated from the University of Alabama, and earned a Rotary International Graduate Scholarship and an M.F.A. from Emerson College. A writer and management consultant, she served as president of the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus before her election. She lives in Newburyport with her husband, Brian, where they raised their daughter.
