He is a former professional basketball player, drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 1974. After his basketball career, he returned to the University of Arkansas to earn a degree in History and later graduated Magna Cum Laude with a master's degree in Education. Tolson is also an inspirational speaker and author, focusing on the importance of education and overcoming adversity. In 2025, he was sworn in as the Secretary for the North Carolina Conference of Clerks of Superior Court for the 2025-2026 term.
