Dennis Barber is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who retired after 22 years of service, holding three command positions. He has lived in Newport for over 35 years and was first elected Mayor in November 2013. He also retired from a 21-year career as a Deputy Sheriff with the Carteret County Sheriff's Office. He has pursued continuing education through the UNC School of Government and the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM), where he is a former Board Member. His community involvement includes roles as Chairman of the Carteret County Transportation Committee and membership in the Newport Moose Lodge and Newport Rotary Club.
