Dr. Dwight McKenna is a native of New Orleans. He graduated from St. Augustine High School, studied at Xavier University and the University of New Orleans, and earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College. He served as a surgeon in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Major. Following an honorable discharge, he practiced as a general surgeon and general practitioner in New Orleans for over 50 years. Dr. McKenna is also the co-founder of McKenna Publishing Company, which publishes The New Orleans Tribune, and co-founder of The George and Leah McKenna Museum of African American Art and Le Musee de f.p.c. He was first elected as the Orleans Parish Coroner in 2017 and took office on May 7, 2018, becoming the first African-American to be elected as Coroner in the nation.
