Eddie Varela is a retired fire chief with a 30-year career as a firefighter, rising to the rank of Deputy Chief in Albuquerque and serving as Fire Chief in Barstow, California. He was born and raised in Albuquerque and graduated from Rio Grande High School. His public service also includes serving as President of the City of Albuquerque Fire Fighters Union, a City Councilor in Reserve, NM, and President of the NM School Board for the Catron County School System.
