Edward Basnight

Edward "Scooter" Basnight was appointed Sheriff of Chowan County in August 2020. He previously served as a Police Officer at the Edenton Police Department and the Elizabeth City Police Department. In 2002, he became a Deputy Sheriff for Chowan County, where he served for 17 years, advancing to the positions of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Chief Deputy. Basnight is a K-9 handler and trainer and a founding member of the Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Dive Team. He earned an Associate's degree in Drafting and Design Technology from the College of The Albemarle in 2002 and a certificate from Martin Community College in 1998. He also received his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate in 2008.
