Gary Rowe was appointed to the Superior Court of Los Angeles County by Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2023. Prior to his appointment, he served as a Deputy Attorney General in the Civil Rights Enforcement Section of the California Department of Justice starting in June 2023. His previous roles include Deputy Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California from 2014 to 2023, and an associate at Greines, Martin, Stein and Richland LLP from 2011 to 2014. Rowe has an extensive academic background, having been a Visiting Associate Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School and the University of Texas Law School, and an Acting Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law from 2001 to 2008. He also served as a Law Clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, a Master of Arts in American History from Princeton University, and a Master of Studies in Modern History from the University of Oxford.
