Born in Lansing, Michigan, she earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Wellesley College. Before serving in the legislature, Johnsen worked as a life and health insurance agent and owned an insurance business. She has also served as the director of the Michigan Capitol House of Prayer and Michigan Pray.
