Gregory Weldon Meeks is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative for New York's 5th congressional district since 1998. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1993 to 1998. Meeks has chaired the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and is a member of the House Financial Services Committee. Raised in East Harlem, he earned his bachelor's degree from Adelphi University and his J.D. from Howard University.
