James E Clyburn

James E. Clyburn, born in Sumter, South Carolina, is a U.S. Representative for South Carolina's 6th Congressional District, first elected in 1992 and currently serving his 17th term. A graduate of South Carolina State, he began his career as a teacher and later served as the first African American advisor to a South Carolina governor, then as Human Affairs Commissioner. He has held significant leadership roles including Assistant Democratic Leader and House Majority Whip. Clyburn prioritizes improving rural airport infrastructure, preserving historic Black colleges, establishing national heritage sites, and protecting voting rights, expressing concern over rulings that dismantle the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He is also involved in co-hosting the Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage.
