Born in Waterloo in 1954, he previously worked as a machinist and is an adjunct instructor. Before his state legislative tenure, he served seven terms representing Waterloo's 4th ward on the City Council. He advocates for increased local control for city councils and supports the legalization of marijuana in Iowa. He is seeking re-election in the 2026 primary.
