John Kavanagh is an Arizona State Senator representing District 3, which includes parts of Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and surrounding areas. A military veteran, he served two decades as a detective sergeant with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department before retiring. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and teaches at Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University. His extensive public service career includes terms on town councils in both New Jersey and Fountain Hills, and he is now in his 19th year in the Arizona legislature, having served in both the House and Senate. He has frequently chaired the powerful Appropriations Committee and served as Senate President Pro Tempore. Currently, he is the Senate Majority Leader, a position he assumed in June 2025. He is seeking re-election in the 2026 Republican primary to continue his service.
