He graduated from Pullman High School in 1987 and attended the National Broadcasting School. His professional background is primarily in radio and retail sales, roles in which he emphasizes the importance of listening and communication. Mahnkey previously served as the Vice-chair of the Whitman County Democrats from 2019-2021 and ran for Whitman County Commissioner in 2022.
