He previously served as a prosecutor for King County and the City of Bellevue. From 1990 to 2019, he was an Associate Executive Director and Legal Counsel for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). Before his legal career, he was a teacher and coach in the Auburn School District. He earned a bachelor's degree (1977) and a master's degree (1981) from the University of Washington, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Puget Sound in 1987.
