Her legal career began with positions in the Marion County, Indiana Prosecutor's Office and the San Diego, California District Attorney's Office. She later served as an assistant attorney general in North Carolina before entering private practice. From 2008 until her election to the bench, she ran her own law practice, Joy A. Jones, P.A. She is admitted to practice law in Indiana, California, and North Carolina.
