Before her election, she was a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) leader at local, county, and state levels, including serving as the President of the Wake County PTA Council. She has also worked as a substitute teacher in Wake County Public Schools, a Guardian ad Litem, and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Von Haefen is a retired attorney who practiced law for over a decade in areas such as criminal law, medical malpractice defense, municipal law, and education law. She earned her bachelor's degree in Journalism from Ohio University and her law degree from Case Western Reserve University. She and her husband moved to Apex in 2005; they have three children.
