A Democratic Party member, he has served three terms in the Montana House of Representatives, representing districts 64 and 65. He assumed office on January 4, 2021, and his current term for District 64 ends January 4, 2027. He is known for focusing on affordability and accountability, and is an expert in technology, broadband, data centers, and AI. He successfully passed a bill in 2025 to refund rental application fees. Kortum is now running for the Montana State Senate, District 32, in the 2026 primary, aiming to continue his work on affordable housing, utilities, strong communities, and personal freedoms.
