She has a background in process improvement, policy advocacy, and emergency response as a former firefighter/EMT. Burnside serves as the President of the Silver Beach Neighborhood Association and represents the association on the Mayor's Neighborhood Advisory Committee. She is also an organizer with the Bellingham Tenants Union and a member of the Whatcom County Housing Advisory Committee. Her advocacy focuses on tenant protections, affordable housing, and supporting those experiencing homelessness. If elected, she would be the first openly queer woman to serve on the Bellingham City Council.
