Kevin Hertel is a Democratic politician serving as the incumbent State Senator for Michigan's 12th District since January 2023. He previously represented the 18th District in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2017 to 2022. Before entering the legislature, Hertel worked as a legislative analyst and special assistant at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Michigan State University. He currently resides in St. Clair Shores.
