Originally from South Korea, he served in the South Korean army before moving to the US in 1993. He is a 9th-degree Taekwondo black belt and has operated his own school in Lynnwood for nearly 30 years. He is an active leader in Washington's Korean-American community and played a key role in establishing the sister-city relationship between Lynnwood and Damyang, South Korea.
