LaVetta Sparks-Wade is a native of Gary, Indiana, and a former member of the Gary City Council. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Tuskegee University and a Master of Public Affairs from Indiana University Northwest. She has previously served as a senior executive in government and non-profit organizations, including working as a city park director. She is running for the U.S. House to represent Indiana's 1st Congressional District.
