He earned both his bachelor's degree in History (1980) and his law degree (1983) from Wake Forest University. After law school, he clerked for a magistrate judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. For 27 years, Meyer practiced law with the firm Poyner Spruill, LLP, focusing on civil litigation. He was appointed as a Wake County District Court Judge in 2012 and has served in that capacity since. He is a past president of the Wake County Bar Association and the Tenth Judicial District Bar.
