Luz Rivas is an engineer, educator, and public servant. Raised in Pacoima by a single mother who immigrated from Mexico, she attended Los Angeles public schools. Rivas earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and later worked as an engineer for Motorola. Motivated to inspire young people, she obtained a Master of Education from Harvard University. In 2012, she founded DIY Girls, a nonprofit organization to encourage girls in the San Fernando Valley to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Prior to her election to Congress in 2025, she served in the California State Assembly for six years, representing the 43rd and 39th districts.
