Mahsaman 'Sam' Hamadani was born in Tehran, Iran, and immigrated to the United States as an infant, growing up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her undergraduate degrees in psychology and sociology and later earned her law degree from the UNC School of Law. Early in her career, she worked as a Legislative Correspondent for then-Senator Joe Biden. After law school, she served Wake County as an assistant public defender. In June 2017, she was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to serve as a Wake County District Court Judge, becoming the first Iranian American judge in North Carolina. Her current term is set to end on December 31, 2026.
