His legal career began in 1998 as an assistant district attorney in Guilford County. In 2010, he started his own law firm, Tyrey Law. He also served as an adjunct professor at Guilford College. In December 2019, he was appointed as a District Court Judge by Governor Roy Cooper. He assumed office for his current role as judge for Seat 1 of the North Carolina 24th Judicial District on January 1, 2024, with his term ending on December 31, 2026. He is a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and as a youth sports coach.
