Maria Alonzo has been an at-large member of the Des Moines Public Schools school board since November 2021. For over 25 years, she has worked as a counselor and advocate for Polk County Crisis and Advocate Services. Alonzo is a member of AFSCME, a co-founder of Giant Peaks Soccer, and has served on the board of LUNA, a community advocacy organization. She is described as a strong voice for the Latinx and immigrant communities.
