Mark Gonzalez was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2024 and serves as the Majority Whip. He represents the 54th Assembly District. Previously, he was the district director for his predecessor, Miguel Santiago, and also worked for former Assembly Speaker John Pérez. Gonzalez served as the Chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, stepping down in March 2024 during his Assembly campaign. He was also a state director for Joe Biden's 2020 presidential campaign. The son of a single mother, he grew up in Section 8 housing and is also a caregiver for his mother. This experience has influenced his focus on issues like housing and healthcare affordability.
