Mark Kleinschmidt is an American lawyer, teacher, and politician who has served as the Orange County Clerk of Superior Court since 2018. He was re-elected in 2022. Previously, he served on the Chapel Hill Town Council from 2001 to 2009 and as the Mayor of Chapel Hill from 2009 to 2015. Kleinschmidt earned a Bachelor of Arts in education from the University of North Carolina and a J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Before his election as Clerk, he practiced law for over 18 years, including work with the Center for Death Penalty Litigation and the Fair Trial Initiative. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the UNC School of Law.
