His career in fire service began in 1978 as a volunteer with the San De Fuca Fire Department, and he became Fire Chief by 1983. He later served as the first career Chief for North Whidbey Fire and Rescue (NWFR) until his retirement in 2015 after 37 years of service. In 2017, he was appointed as a Commissioner for NWFR, where he currently serves as Board Chairman. Prior to becoming the career Chief, he worked for 26 years as a North Whidbey road maintenance supervisor for Island County.
