Mary Washington

Dr. Mary Washington is a Democratic State Senator representing Maryland's 43rd Legislative District. She was elected to the Senate in 2018 following eight years of service in the House of Delegates, where she served from 2011 to 2018. Her initial election to the legislature in 2010 was a historic milestone, making her the first openly LGBTQ+ African-American elected to the Maryland General Assembly. Dr. Washington earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University and has a professional background that includes experience as a university professor and a nonprofit leader. In her legislative capacity, she focuses on issues of equity and justice, championing policy related to housing, education, and the environment for her constituents.
